Competition Preparedness Information- Support and FAQ for first time parents!

We are initiating a handful of first-time dance parents into the competition world this season! Welcome! We have prepared a fun Q&A to help us prepare for this season and wanted to share it with everyone. If you are an experienced dance parent, please watch out for our newbies! Competition for the first time can be overwhelming and new dance parents can feel clueless, lost, and intimidated about the rush of it all! Please be helpful, kind and calm to each other! There are a lot of you and only a few of us, so helpful parents can be a lifesaver to a new dance mom or dad. We are so excited for this weekend and want to make sure it is great for all our parents and dancers!

If you read this over & think of something we should add to help inform future parents, let us know! 

“Crap! Susie has a hole in her tights and has misplaced her earrings and I just noticed Saturday morning. What should I do?” We always have extra tights, earrings, eyelashes etc. Don’t stress about it! If you need these items just know that you can pick them up when you arrive for your call time! No need to call us to tell us that you need these items, we probably are already at the competition and can’t answer!

“What it I have a last minute question or get stuck in traffic and am going to be late?” If you have an urgent question on competition weekend, the fastest way to get a response will be:

  1. Let your team know in the GroupMe

  2. Text the studio phone number 801-683-7588

“Am I allowed in the dressing room?” Yes, but we often share dressing rooms with other studios and are often very crowded. Men are NOT allowed in the dressing rooms. Once your dancer’s call time has passed and your dancer is completely ready to perform, you should leave them with a teacher and exit the dressing room. This will help keep the dancers focused as we prepare for performance. After your dancer performs, meet us

“Do I need to come backstage?” Parents should never be backstage with a dancer unless it is a solo and a teacher is not present.  This is the last chance for dancers to be focused and ready to perform and the fewer the distractions, the better.

“Should I stay by my dancers side the whole day?” While dancing on stage is fun, most of the dancer’s favorite memories will come from spending the day with their teammates.  We try to always organize team lunches, but we encourage you to let your dancer spend time with other teammates.  Of course our younger dancers should always have adult supervision and we trust your judgement as to setting boundaries and expectations for your dancers when not dancing. Teachers are not able to supervise outside of team call times. After your dancer has danced you need to pick them up in the dressing room. They will remain in your care until their next call time.

“Can I send treats for the team?” No need. We don’t want dancers eating in their costumes or making a mess in the facility. Please make sure they are wearing their jacket or jersey at the competition the whole day.

“Where do we keep our stuff during the day?” Each studio will be assigned a dressing room or changing area. We can leave our bags in that space for the day. Be conscious of how much space your dancer’s items are taking up and keep your area neat and tidy.

“I don’t really know other parents, and no one is talking to me” Don’t wait! Walk up and introduce yourself to another mom! Our company parents are some of the nicest and sweetest people we know! Chances are if you’re feeling like this, other people are too, so make the first move and you’ll get to know people in no time!

“What in the world happens at awards?” At awards all dancers will gather together on the stage. Encourage your little one to go find their friends from our studio. One of our teachers or an older student will sit with our younger teams to ensure that their attitude stays positive, to help them understand what the announcer is saying, and to redirect dancer’s reactions if needed. We think awards are a great time to reinforce the classroom focus on doing our best, growing, and improving. Big awards are fun, but if that isn’t the end result we want to make sure that we help them to process their disappointment into the mindset of “We can do better next time,” and “We can work harder in class so that we can continue to improve.” We also encourage our dancers to have great sportsmanship by clapping for the other teams during awards! They should come to awards wearing their team crewneck and pink team pants (or whatever is listed in the final details as the designated teamwear for that event).

“Does my dancer receive an award?” Most competitions present the studio with one large trophy to represent all the dances performed and give each dancer some sort of participation award. These participation awards are usually given to us and can be picked up from our teachers. Sometimes competitions have them near the main entrance of the competition and you can pick them up after you dance.  If participation awards are not handed out at the competition, we will have them at their next class.

“I am more stressed about competition than I was for my own wedding. Why do I feel like this?” STOP WORRYING! We are going to have so much fun at competition! Just sit back and enjoy seeing your dancer beaming with excitement and pride before and after the performances. Don’t be afraid to ask a teacher or another parent if you have questions about where to be or what to do! Competition is something you have to experience to know. After the first weekend you will be seasoned professional dance moms and dads! (Nice ones of course.)

A Parent's Role in Team Cohesion

At Expressions Dance, we are committed to crafting better dancers and creating even better people. One way we are doing this is by creating more cohesive teams. Team cohesion is the level of unity and interpersonal connection among team members that helps them stay together and work towards shared goals. Parents play a crucial role in fostering a positive and supportive environment for their dancer’s team. Here are ways parents can contribute to improved team cohesion:

Support the Team and Teachers

  • Positive Reinforcement: Encourage your dancer to focus on personal improvement and team success.

    • What does this look like? Talk to your dancer about their personal goals and what the team goals are. Ask them “what went well for you today in class? What went well for your team? What is one thing you can do today, to support a team member in their personal goals or the team overall?”

  • Respect the Teachers: Support the studio director and teachers’ decisions and teaching methods. Open communication with the studio director and teachers can be beneficial, but avoid undermining their authority, especially in front of your dancer and other parents.

    • What does this look like? Remind yourself and your dancer that teachers and the studio director want the best for your dancer. They carefully place dancers to highlight strengths and boost growth. Use effective communication when discussing concerns.

  • Be a Good Role Model: Demonstrate good sportsmanship by cheering for all dancers.

    • What does this look like? Let your dancer see you cheering on all their teammates. Know their teammate’s names and cheer for them individually as well. Find opportunities for your dancer to hear you tell a teammate something they did well during a routine.

Encourage Teamwork and Friendship

  • Positive Communication: Encourage open and respectful communication between your dancer and their teammates.

    • What does this look like? Team conflicts can arise, but open and respectful communication can prevent many conflicts. Relationship expert John Gottman stated “94% of the time, the way a discussion starts determines the way it will end.” Practice communication skills at home and guide your dancer toward positive communication with teammates. Also, help redirect them when they are talking poorly about a teammate either verbally or through text messages.

  • Conflict Resolution: Teach your dancer effective conflict resolution skills to maintain positive relationships with teammates.

    • What does this look like? Help your dancer become a conflict resolver. Encourage them to talk things out with teammates first. Role-playing can help. Remind them it’s okay to make mistakes, but owning up to them is important. Ignoring programs will hurt the team, so guide them to find solutions instead of just fixing it for them.

Create a Supportive Home Environment

  • Emotional Support: Provide emotional support and encouragement for your dancer, regardless of the outcome of team selection, dance routines, classes, or competitions.

    • What does this look like? Michael Jordan became the best player in NBA history, because he used his disappointments as motivation to be the best player he could be. Acknowledge and validate your dancer’s emotions, then help them channel it into improvement. Remind them to focus on personal growth, not competition with teammates.

  • Healthy Perspective: Help your dancer maintain a healthy perspective on dance, emphasizing fun, skill development, and teamwork.

    • What does this look like? Remind your dancer that dance is more than just winning a competition. It’s about having fun, bettering themselves, and learning how to work as a team.

  • Limit Pressure: Avoid putting excessive pressure on your child to perform. This can create unnecessary stress and can hinder team cohesion.

    • What does this look like? Be your dancer’s biggest fan. Cheer them on, offer support, and help them have realistic expectations (it’s okay if they aren’t the star or winning). They are more than “just a dancer!” Help them know who they are outside of dance.

Focus on the Big Picture

  • Long-Term Goals: Remember that dance is about developing life skills, not just about winning or about being better than others. It’s about being the best dancer that YOUR dancer can be.

  • Enjoy the Journey: Focus on the enjoyment of dance and the opportunity for your dancer to learn and grow.

By actively supporting your dancer AND their team, you contribute significantly to a positive and nurturing dance environment. Together, we can create a strong foundation for lifelong friendships, personal growth, and a love for dance. Let’s empower our dancers to shine both individually and as a team.

FEB 1-14: FOOD & SOCK DRIVE: HEARTS FOR HUNGER

Let's warm hearts and toes! Help us fill our bins with new socks and much needed food items to support the “pantry packs program” at the Bountiful Food Pantry. We are excited to provide a rewarding and simple service opportunity for our students and their families to benefit our community. Items can be brought to either studio through Feb 14.

TINY TOTS TRANSITION TO INDEPENDENT DANCERS

Beginning February 3, all current Tiny Tots dancers will attend class without a grown up! (This does not yet apply to the new Wed 7pm class, they will transition in March!) Check your email for important tips on how to successfully help your dancer make this adjustment. Tiny Tots will now adhere to the studio's "Parent Observation Policy" and will drop off and pick up their student in the lobby. Parents are welcome to come and watch class during our Parent Peek Week in April. Having a designated day for parents to watch eliminates constant distractions each week and allows for much faster progress. All children learn and develop differently. We encourage you to allow your child to learn at their own pace while continuing to praise them on their accomplishments! We are so excited to watch these little dancers take the next step and continue to progress on their own!

FOR PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL DANCERS- FEBRUARY THEME

In February our theme is "Me and My Teddy." All month we will go on a fabulous journey with our friend, Mr. Teddy Bear!  We are exploring different varieties of music while incorporating lots of dancing skills.  This month we are focusing on: hop on one foot, tendu, developing rhythm, waiting turns, boogie, twist, rock'n roll, and saute jumps. We hope you can find time to review these elements with your dancer. It is a great way to get moving at home!!

FEB 24-28: BRING A TEDDY BEAR DAY (Pre-K and Preschool Dance classes, Leap’n Learners classes)

All pre-k and preschool dance classes will be dancing with their favorite Teddy Bear this week! Don’t forget to bring your bear!

FALL ENROLLMENT NOW OPEN FOR ACADEMIC PRESCHOOL!

We are now accepting registration for Fall 2025 preschool at both locations.  The benefit to our preschool is that it INCLUDES our dance and tumbling classes.  Get it all done in one!  There is no reason to sign up for separate dance, tumbling, and preschool programs.  We offer it all and have the BEST TEACHERS around!  Leap'n Learners ignites a child's mind and awakens a passion for learning and movement that will last a lifetime. www.goleapnlearn.com

STRETCH & STRENGTH OF THE MONTH: Straddle & Bridge

We are so excited to have a “stretch of the month” and a “strength challenge” in our school-aged acro/tumbling classes! Encourage your child to work on these skills at home to help them improve even faster!  Be more involved by printing off the at home practice tracker HERE.

PROPER DANCE ATTIRE: Please review the class dress code requirements and make sure your dancer is dressed appropriately for class!  We cannot provide proper feedback if we aren't able to see the alignment of our dancers. Send your dancers with their hair pulled back (bun for ballet). STARS dancers must wear their uniform, pink tights (footless or convertible so they can pull them up for jazz), and ballet shoes. STARS dancers in 3rd grade and older also need jazz shoes. Please help us by sending your child to class in the right attire. Need help with a bun? Watch the Bun Tutorial!

January Newsletter 2025

Happy New Year!

Message from Ms. Amy:

Hi families! Happy New Year! As we reflect on 2024, I am thankful for the progress we’ve made and the direction we are going. I’m proud to be able to provide a place that can contribute to our community in raising up the next generation of leaders to accomplish all they set out to do through the platform of dance and preschool.

Whenever I ask veteran parents WHY they kept their kids in the arts like dance, music, karate, and all the things, they say,” I knew my kids would learn things they didn’t even realize they were being taught. I wanted them to learn skills that would help them succeed in LIFE, not just learn to dance." The message I get whenever I have this conversation with anyone is clear. Parents want to provide opportunities that will give their children:

  • Mentors who can guide and inspire them.

  • Outlets of expression.

  • A home away from home they are heard, seen, and valued.

  • Meaningful friendships.

  • A chance to learn to persevere and finish something to find out what commitment really means. Even if the excitement wears off and you don't want to finish, push through and don't give up!

  • Experiences to become well-rounded seasoned adults.

So, in this new year I thank you. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be mentors, to be a place that holds your children accountable to their greatness, to be the place that gives them a creative outlet, to be the second home, third place, and supportive community for families and students. Thank you for giving us the privilege of being part of their life story!

Hoping you all had the happiest of Holidays and we are all looking forward to a wonderful 2025!

XOXO

Amy

PAJAMA SUCCESS!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our annual pajama drive, what a success! We did an amazing job of turning a few heads by collecting a total of 980 pajamas and 487 books…WOW! We were able to donate to: Utah Foster Care Foundation from Ogden to Murray, Christmas Box House, Murray Children’s Pantry, McMillan and Horizon Elementary. Great job! Together we made a difference!

Mark your calendars for the same time next year, let’s see if we can out do ourselves each and every year!

Congratulations to the following students for meeting the requirements to join our Service Society! Stop by the office to pick up your service society pin! These dancers collected 10 pajamas, 20 books, or $50 cash donations: Quinn Loftus, Illyana & Sebastian Leon, Ava Anderson, Addison West, Nacana Jones, Raphael Lake, Jia Campbell, Delilah Merica, Harper Nelson, Saige Nelson, Sophie Stock, Azelya Palomares, Kensley Coon, Ava Toone, Lydia Moore, Lydia Christiansen, Olivia Clayton, Camille Coleman, Gracyn Shipley, Ellie Argyle, Sonya Lee

(If you donated the required items and we missed your name above, email the office. We definitely want to give credit to all those who participated!)

PUSHING THROUGH COLD WEATHER

While we can’t stop the snow from falling, we can help our dancers beat the winter blues by warming them up with dance. The winter months are the best time to be attending dance lessons since seasonal depression kicks in and there is not as much outdoor time to be had. Dance lessons get you moving, laughing, and make you forget about those icicles outside for just a little while! If your dancer is struggling to push through and come to class, it’s worth the encouragement! If you can just get them in the door, they are going to have a great time and leave happier!

FALL 2025 ACADEMIC PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT OPENS JANUARY 13

Registration for Fall 2025 preschool at both locations is just about here!  The benefit to our preschool is that it INCLUDES our dance and tumbling classes.  Get it all done in one!  We offer it all and have the BEST TEACHERS around.  Space is limited. LEARN MORE

FOR PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL DANCERS- JANUARY THEME

This month our theme is "I Need A Hero."  We will be focusing on teaching our dancers important rules for safety and good manners! We encourage you to get involved and have them practice their skills at home!  Here is what we will be working on in class this month: echappe, step touch with jumps, hips- side to side, following directions, angry faces.

PRESCHOOL DANCERS CAN NOW “EARN THEIR WINGS!”

We are excited to continue our fun incentive to help our preschoolers master their SKIPS! When dancers pass off skips at dance they will be invited to earn their wings at a “Fairy and Prince Party!” on February 21st.  Start practicing skips at home so they can EARN YOUR WINGS!

NEW! SPLITS CLUB PINS

School aged dancers who pass of their splits (right, left or middle) earn a pin and join the Splits Club for 2025. They’ll also be invited to a special Banana Split Party the end of May! Get stretching!

FOR PARENTS OF SCHOOL AGED TUMBLING/ACRO STUDENTS

January Stretch of the Month- Hips  |  Strength Challenge- V-sits

We are so excited this year to have a “stretch of the month” and a “strength challenge” in our acro/tumbling classes! Encourage your child to work on these skills at home to help them improve even faster!  Be more involved by printing off the at home practice tracker HERE.

HIP HOP CLASSES- SHOE POLICY

Winter is here! Please carry your hip hop shoes into the studio and change into them before you enter the classroom.  You will be asked to dance with no shoes if you don't have a dry pair! Thank you!
